. profits have only been going up since president bush left office and the congress passed president obama's stimulus package. here's the bad news. business owners aren't using those record profits to pay their workers. profits hit an all-time high, but workers wages have simply bottomed out. in fact, wages have hit an all-time low. let's take a look at this. it seems to be some kind of income fairness in this country. until about 2000. wages have gone from here down to there in 12 years. have you heard the term "off the charts"? here we go. corporate profits, then the recession hit. but back at it. there's a pretty huge separation between corporate profits and wages. one line is going off the charts and the other one is going down. but there's good news. even though wages are lower, consumers are basically driving the economy. consumer confidence reached its highest point since february of 2008. in a new report, it shows the automobile industry continues to roar back. almost every auto maker is reporting big sales gains. dodge is up for the 32nd month in a row. chrysler sales up 14% over
person, everyone talks about what the fiscal cliff could do to small business, what obama care can do for small business, but you said we shouldn't worry about that so much, that we should get some sort of compromise in order to keep moving and keep talking and keep moving forward? >> well, i think that it was pretty clear during the course of the election and since and even in the president's speech today where he said he's willing to give on some revenue and some spending cuts, he's proposed some, he's already passed some into law. and beyond that, just from my perspective, what i see is that we know that we're a confidence-based economy, we're 70% of the economy driven by consumer spending and anything that puts a crimp in consumer spending is not good for the economy. so to put a tax rise, a tax rate increase for the middle class makes no sense to me. someone who makes 50, 60, $70,000 a year will lose and will take away a lot of discretionary purchases from people like me and travel and a whole host of other areas. i hope our leaders in washington are listening and they take the s

of town for a long weekend break. fox business network's rich edson is live from washington. so are we seeing any movement in these talks at all, rich? >> some, jon. a house aide says president obama and house speaker john boehner spoke on the phone yesterday afternoon. that is their first conversation in a week and since republicans offered $800 billion in new tax revenue and more than a trillion dollars in spending cuts. aides refuse to say if the president and speaker are now closer to a deal. for both sides a little more campaigning. president obama heads to northern virginia this afternoon. the white house says he will meet with a middle class family to press congress to protect those making less than $250,000 a year from tax increases and raise rates on those making more. house republicans return to their congressional districts. they will meet with small business owners to underscore how they say tax rate increases will hit those business, jon. jon: are they still hung up on taxes? is that the big sticking point? >> yes. taxes are the key to this debate. republicans say they wil
